| Just curious...How often do you all do a water change on your aquarium?
I do a 15% WC once a week on my 50 gallon reef, but I only do a 15% WC once a month of my macro tank...

| I do about 40% once a week on my pico, but that's what is suggested for my puffer. The plants probably make that somewhat unnecessary but so far so good!! | |

| I do them at varying levels, if somethings off, i might do 10% every week for a month, then just every month. then if notings going wrong, skip a month. Salt kills me so i try to conserve where i can :\ | |

| I mean other than a highbioload due to the lionfish, its not like theyre gonna eat the corals.. you could grow some gorgonians no problem.. might give it a key westie look.. that purple one we picked up in sarasota is still doing good for me! maybe an elegance coral? they're supposed to like ultra high nutrient levels | |

| I plan on that purple one in Sarasota that was on the sign post. I'm hoping that it is still there, it was about 12-14in high and 8in wide. | |

| Lol I'm glad to hear it is growing well for you. You wouldn't believe how big the arrow crab now is. He is probably around 6 inches from side to side | |

| Wow! That's a lot Wes! I never thought about nitrates building up like that since you can't vacuum the gravel. That stinks... Don't your plants take care of some of the No3? My macroalgae sucks it up, so I only have to do a WC on that tank every once in awhile. | |

| I do 5 gallons from a 40 gallon tank every weekend, but if I skip a weekend here or there, nothing really happens.
On a side note: Reading back through the older posts, I just want to ask: Are you guys aware of the legality of taking stuff? Im sure fishing and inverts are fine (except particular inverts like sand dollars, I think) but I know it's illegal to collect your own live rock, and I always thought it was illegal to take corals. What with the whole decline in reefs and what not. Im not so sure taking a gorgonian is legal...

| they do to a point , they main thing I get concerned about is the toxins that decaying plants let off , so just to be safe I do the big water changes ans since Ive been doing it my fish have never been happier | |

| Ashely, I'm fairly well informed on the rules of whats collectable and such thanks for looking out though If i remember correctly, gorg are allowed as long as i'm collecting less than x colonies (like 10 or something I would never even get close to) but seafans are not allowed. (have never seen any anyways) Yeah, I make sure to steer clear of the live rock and live hard corals | |

| im gonna be straight out honest ive never changed my water in the 2 and half years ive had it actually ive had to add water to counteract the water evaporating and every once in a while i will add salt to make sure the levels are right but ive never had to change it am i the only one who is doing this | |

| If you have a deep sand bed and adequate filtration (live rock, etc...), your levels may be fine. I personally don't change my water based on bad levels, though if I see it lookin a hot mess I will do an emergency one. I try to do regular water changes to siphon out debris or replinish ions and nutrients that are slowly used up in the tank. Being a closed system, the inhabitants (fish, corals, bacteria in the rock, everything) use up minerals and other "goodies" in the water, but they don't produce them, so eventually, they run out. You will often see aquarium salt with "added calcium and magnesium" or supplements in stores for Iodine, Potassium, or "trace elements". Your corals, and even your fish, need these trace elements for growth or perhaps they need it for certain enzymes to work best. If you're adding these supplements and your filtration is doing a great job, then you may not need to do a water change. | |
