Yay, gannets! Those are not birds to tangle with. When we were rehabbing gannets from the oil spill, one or two hospital workers got a beak through-and-through their leg. I still get paranoid when I hear them honk!

Through the leg? That's a lil freaky!

I saw one "Man-vs-Wild" show where he used a beak from some waterbird as a fishing spear. The bird was already dead

He used it to catch a 2ft triggerfish! (where's a spearfishing smilie when you need one?? lol)

Yeah, very powerful birds. The ones in that link are cape gannets, out here we have northern gannets. they spend very little time on land (only to mate and very quickly raise their young) before the peace out back to the open ocean. As you can imagine, you have to be durable to survive out there! It takes a few of us to hold them down during check-ups.

That's also really crazy about the spearing! I bet he ate well off that trigger!! I guess he tied the beak to a branch, eh?

Yep, found a nice pointy branch and tied it on with fishing line.. Kinda wanted to try it..
