PostSubject: Duckweed?   Tue Aug 30, 2011 6:04 pm

Has anyone used duckweed in their tank before? I have heard it is super helpful and fish love it, but you have to scrape the mess out of it or it will take over your life. Can anyone confirm or deny that? lol

If not.. maybe I'll bite the bullet and be the first to test it!

I can't help you. Maybe PM Don (aka WhySoSerious?). He keeps freshwater plants. think

Does it make duck sounds??? Quack Quack?

If it did... I'd try some.

Lmao couldn't help it! Very Happy

But Ashley I've never personally tried it, used it, or seen it in stores, like Samantha said sending a PM to Don might be useful.

For the record, while I found an abundance of free duckweed floating around in lettuce lake.. my paranoia for pest snails led me to purchasing captive grown hornwort; a notoriously greedy eater of chemical evils like nitrates. Helps keep freshwater tanks happy and it grows like all get-out Laughing My marble hatchets LOVE it

Just keep in mind that certain species of small floating freshwater plants, such as salvinia minima, actually fix nitrogen from the atmosphere and pump it into the water

DUCKWEED IS THE HERPES FOR FISHTANKS!!!!!!!! lol however some fish find it delicious. Cichlids, Koi, goldfish. But seriously, if it goes in your tank, it wont leave =[

Geez.. the only herpes I have is glitter (get it once, and it magically comes back no matter what you do!! LOL!!)

I have heard it is persistent! But I thought my hatchets would like it.. they seem content with the hornwort, though Smile

You could prob try it? Dont put a lot in just see if they will, if they do go for it. In order for duckweed to propagate needs slow moving or almost still water

My tank has a noticeable current, so in theory it shouldn't be a pain?

But while I have you cornered in plants.. do you know of any plants that do well in warm water? I have a small tank that sits at about 83+F due to the giant filter marineland built into it.. not very smart. Anyway, obviously REALLY WARM.

(for those of you reading, it used to be the TANK OF SHAME.. which is now the tank of stupid as I populated it with male guppies. LOL)

i tend to keep my tanks at around 81-84degrees. Sometimes a little lower, but I have 2x250watt double ended metal halides on my 100gal so it runs hot. You will do fine with crypts, anubias, chain sword, dwarf sag, jungle val, bocapa caroliniana, ferns (attach ferns and anubias to drift wood, they look soooo much better. Im ordering a rare fern soon, if i can get it going im going to sell some =P) but yeah, you would be good with almost anything plant wise. i would avoid baby tears, dwarf hairgrass or reg hairgrass for that mater for the fact that you usually need Co2 injections. btw they do make coolers for tanks that run hot =]

They ting is that tank size comes in handy I have a big tank so the temp is kind of dispersed. So if it get tight I probably would go with Discus type plants (like amazon river plants) before i forget that, size can matter. and a good substrate will help as well. I could let you know what you could do for that as well. My 100 is a substrate, my 10 is a dirt/substrate.

Don, I have baby ferns right now, this of undetermined species. They grow very similar to java ferns, except they have forks at the end of the leaves. They grow more when the forks sprout roots and detach from the parent plant. I am mentioning them because they have attached to the java ferns and I have no idea what will become of the plant :b lol. Once I get a fresh java baby you can have it!

But if you have moss.. yes, I'd love some!

Okay, let me get this straight reallllll quick lol your asking me to identify a fern???? If you could take pictures for me I can help you quickly. I am so sorry that i am replying so late =[ i have been extremely busy =[. What that sounds like to me is baby java fern. sometimes baby java fern will grow at the tips of the leaves. but for the most part its an extension of the rhizome. and i just threw out a lotttt of java moss lol but I still have a ton =] so hopefully I will be able to make more meetings this year and I will bag some for you =D

It's not the basic java fern species, it's a related type of java fern, I just can never remember what they're called. They have been propagating like MAD and attaching to everything else in the tank. But they're nice! Just offering you a few if you wanted.. just keep an eye on em lol

YAY moss!! I hope you can make it out!
