Tanked Empty
PostSubject: Tanked   Tanked EmptySat Aug 20, 2011 9:25 am

Did anyone watch the premiere of the aquarium reality show "Tanked" on Animal Planet last night?

What's your opinion on the show??

I thought their aquarium builds looked awesome, but part of me got a little ruffled with the show. They didn't cycle their aquariums, they didn't QT anything, they didn't use RO/DI water, they mixed the saltwater right before adding the fish, they added all of their fish at once, the only parameters they checked throughout the show were temp. and pH. Shocked However, their aquariums did look pretty awesome, though, I just wish the show would have been more informative and sensitive to proper aquarium practices than reality-based... Neutral

One thing that I did notice during the show was they talked about QT fish a lot, I like to think they had bought the fish well before the tank was being setup and QT'd them.

They mentioned quarantining fish, and they built a QT system for that one client, but I think (for the most part) they just bought everything straight from the wholesaler/store and threw them in the aquarium...

There might be behind the scenes things they do that just dont end up on the show cause it's boring "Science stuff" like ammonia and cycling and whatnot. Since they've clearly had a good enough business already going, Im sure they do actually do that stuff. People like cool tanks, but not if everything dies all the time.

I agree about the confusion. I've only seen about 3 episodes, but they do seem to dump everything in there and go "TA DAAA" and leave. Also as mentioned, I ASSUME there are more serious care steps going into their systems, considering they are doing them for aquarium parks, casinos, and hotels.

The only thing that has me rolling my eyes so hard they're almost popping out of my face is how they all squeal and cry over cage swimming with nurse sharks and sand tigers... really? If I can bump into them wild without a problem, surely you in your cage will survive (it's not like they were bull sharks!) shark chase

I read on another forum that they use a bacterial solution that allows them to be able to add all of the fish at once and not worry about cycling the aquarium. Supposedly, it's the same solution that public aquariums use. If that's the case, it's pretty cool. Smile

I'm not sure. I just looked it up on Hulu, but it seems like they only have excerpts from the show, not the full episodes. Hulu just redirects you to Animal Planet's website. Sad Don't know what to tell you... don\'t know

So what they're telling me is, that MONSTER aquarium they built in that giant church in Dallas cost more than an airplane... Laughing
